The upcoming superhero film Captain Marvel will star Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson in the role of the main character. Larson has long been the subject of speculation concerning the role, and the news was announced during a Marvel presentation in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con today. Larson herself appeared on stage at the end of the reveal, much to the delight of fans.
[IMG]Back in June it was reported Marvel’s first choice for the Captain Marvel film was Larson, with executives allegedly in early talks with the actress. Larson won the Best Actress award at this year's Oscars for her performance in the drama Room. She is also known for supporting roles in Scott Pilgrim vs The World and 21 Jump Street, and will next be seen in the Martin Scorsese-produced action movie Free Fire.
Captain Marvel was originally scheduled for a July 2018 release, but was moved back to make way for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man and the Wasp. It is now scheduled to be released at cinemas in March 2019, and will be Marvel’s first female superhero-led movie. The studio also revealed the film's logo during the presentation.
Captain Marvel has been the name of various heroes over the years. The current incarnation, and the one expected to feature in the film, is the alter ego of the character Carol Danvers. Danvers previously used the name of Ms Marvel and first appeared in her own comic book in 1977, before taking the identity of Captain Marvel in 2012.
