Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has discussed how he feels about being tied to, and perhaps even defined, by the Souls series.
Kotaku asked Miyazaki if, 10 years from now, he was primarily remembered for the game design template that developer From Software has used for Demon's Souls, the Dark Souls series, and Bloodborne. Or if he'd like to create something new and different.
"To be honest, I’m really not interested on how I'm viewed as," he replied. "The only thing I'm interested in is to keep creating something special. Whether that something is synonymous to me or not is really none of my concern."
Continuing, Miyazaki said he "can't deny the fact that the Souls series is something special to" him and he is "happy to know that people have that sort of image" of him.
However, he also indicated that he's determined to create something that tops the Souls series.
"Even if that image stays with me, I have no intention of ending in a way where I couldn’t create a game that surpasses the Souls series. That would be pretty sad, wouldn't it?"
In April, Miyazaki confirmed development on a new property has begun at From Software, and the studio has no intention of following Dark Souls 3 up with another sequel. In total, From Software is working on three new games.
In an interview with GameSpot, Miyazaki previous said, as president of From Software, he would aggressively pursue new ideas.
I just believe that [moving on from Dark Souls] is necessary in order for players to continue enjoying our games," he explained. "We have to keep creating quality games and be aggressive about doing new things."
