The wait for Rime has been a long one, and there were times where it looked like it may have been canceled. Developer Tequila Works recently confirmed it is still coming, and we now know it'll arrive in 2017--and it may not end up being a PS4 exclusive after all.
Grey Box and Six Foot, two smaller game publishers, announced today that they will help Tequila Works publish Rime next year. The game, which has drawn comparisons to Ico, was first revealed in 2013 but hasn't been seen in some time. Earlier this year, Tequila Works reacquired the rights to the game and parted ways with its publishing partner, Sony.
Today's announcement reaffirms that Rime is in development but casts doubt on Rime's status as a PS4 exclusive. A press release says more gameplay and "platform availability details" will be shared in early 2017, followed by a release "later that year." It's not impossible the game still ends up only releasing on PS4, but the language in this announcement suggests it will end up on more platforms.
Microsoft previously passed on the opportunity to help fund the game, leading to Xbox boss Phil Spencer saying that part of his job "is living with mistakes."
Rime is described as a single-player puzzle adventure game that "offers players a meaningful journey filled with discovery."
"We've always wanted Rime to captivate players' imaginations, capturing that feeling of being a child and experiencing the wonders of a bedtime story for the first time," said creative director Raul Rubio Munarriz. "We're so excited to find in Grey Box and Six Foot partners just as eager as we are to make that vision for such a personal project a reality."
