'The Legend of Zelda' Wii U release date news: Shigeru Miyamoto reveals reasons for the game's delay
The people behind the highly anticipated "The Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" for the Nintendo Wii U recently explained why most of the games in "The Legend of Zelda" franchise have experienced numerous delays and are rarely released on the day that was first announced for it as the release date.
"The Legend of Zelda: Breathe of the Wild" was originally slated for an earlier release date, which was way back in 2015. Then, the release was pushed back to 2016 after the company allegedly saw "several new possibilities" for it. Now, it has once again been delayed to 2017 and was announced as coming to Nintendo's new console — the Nintendo NX.
In a recent interview with Kotaku, Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the "The Legend of Zelda" franchise, as well as other iconic Nintendo franchises such as "Super Mario Bros.," revealed that as a developer, he never wanted to give a release date for the game that he was working on. However, given that the industry works a certain way, he had to — at some point — tell fans that they can expect this game to come out at a certain time.
"First of all, it would be great if I didn't have to put a release date out at all," Miyamoto said. "But I have to," he added.
As for the delays itself, Miyamoto gave a number of reasons why delays had always happened to "The Legend of Zelda" games, even in the past. To recall, " Ocarina of Time" was originally slated for a 1997 release but came out in 1998. "The Wind Waker" and "Twilight Princess" also came out a year later than what was previously announced. He said that there were various reasons like underestimating how long a project takes or games lacking in direction.
"We had to make sure that design has enough time to create that. It just dawned on us that we're not able to do that in this schedule," Miyamoto said, talking specifically about the upcoming "Breathe of the Wild" and the time they needed to implement the physics engine, artificial intelligence and graphics.
"That's what we realized about two years ago. In this instance, we never really experienced this, so that's why we had to delay it."
"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" for the Nintendo Wii U will be released sometime in 2017.
