Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie has an idea about why so many of Jared Leto's Joker scenes were cut from Suicide Squad.
Appearing on a new episode of Tipsy Talk, Robbie said she and Leto filmed many flashback sequences for Harley and Joker. While the backstory sequences were powerful, according to Robbie, they did not push the story forward and could have in fact "confused" the present-day storyline.
[IMG]"[The producers] probably realized that the emotional through-line of the story had to be the mission that we were on, and explaining the Enchantress' position and all that kind of stuff," Robbie said, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. "And the [Harley and Joker] backstory stuff, though it's magic and some of the stuff we shot was insane, they are flashbacks … so there's a lot, but it just didn't make sense to confuse the present storyline to incorporate all that."
There is no word yet on if these scenes may show up in an extended cut or through special features on the eventual home video release. Whatever the case, Robbie is hopeful that Harley and Joker can be the focus of another movie, one she is personally lobbying for.
"I'm trying to make that happen," she said. "There's just so much more to do."
In May, it was reported that Robbie was spearheading an effort to make a Harley Quinn spinoff movie, featuring Harley (played by Robbie) and a cast of other female heroes and villains.
According to Leto, the number of Joker scenes cut from Suicide Squad's theatrical version amounted to enough to fill an entire Joker movie.
"I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene, it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity," Leto said in an earlier interview. "Because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there's probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie.

Suicide Squad opened in theaters on August 5. Despite a middling critical reception, the David Ayer-directed movie broke box office records and has already pulled in more than $260 million worldwide after just one weekend.
